Pregnancy and Postnatal Emotional Problems

Pregnancy, giving birth and becoming a mother are times of huge adjustment. About 13% of women will suffer from depression after having a baby. New research shows that the number of women with depression during pregnancy may be even higher. Many women also suffer from anxiety and stress. Difficulties may begin to develop during pregnancy or after having a baby.

If you think that you have low mood, anxiety, stress or any psychological problem during pregnancy or after you have your baby, it is important that you speak to someone. Your Midwife, GP or Health Visitor all have experience of helping women with emotional difficulties during this time. If it feels too much to speak to a professional, you could speak to your partner, a family member or a friend. Women sometimes find that they begin to feel better just by admitting that there may be a problem.

Remember – there is help available and you are not alone in feeling this way
