Emotions and Extreme Moods
Emotions are a normal part of life
Feelings are part of the human experience and change naturally in response to day-to-day events.
Emotions can help us cope with our environment and everyday life.
Often we can easily understand how our feelings are related to what is going on in our lives. For example, if we are sad when a friend is having problems or angry when someone lets us down then it is easy to understand why we are upset. We learn to manage our feelings throughout our lives. Sometimes it is easy to cope with feelings, but at other times they can be overwhelming. For some people, coping with feelings has always been difficult. |

What about when feelings are too intense or out of control?Extreme moods might follow a long period of stress or a series of upsetting events. It is not unusual to have extreme responses to extreme circumstances. Many people also have quite extreme feelings without being able to identify specific causes. Our reactions to intense feelings can be difficult to understand. For some people the problem of extreme mood has been life-long. There are various types of extreme mood, including low mood (depression) and elated mood (mania). |
